Listening to Music

Quick note about BM.

Listening to music is a big part of my life. There’s a track for every occasion and mood, and an infinite more to be discovered. I’ve written about my musical tastes in the past (one of my first posts, if I remember correctly). Hold on…here it is!

I guess this post will be a quick update since the last time I wrote about this, then.

My go-to genre is still rock, and I’ve discovered two types that particularly define me – 90s alternative, and British bands. Something about the 90s I can just relate to – I definitely feel the most at home when listening to bands such as Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, and the like.

I’m still a big fan of trance and house, with an update – I’m listening a bit more to dubstep, or at least the Skrillex version of it (a mix of dubstep and several other electronica sub-genres).

The biggest change (and surprise) has been my increased interest (and listens) to rap/hip-hop. I’ve never been able to enjoy rap music, probably due to the sad state of commercialized rap, but in the past couple years, I’ve slowly opened the doors to real rap – there is good rap music out there!

I started off with A Tribe Called Quest, and from there began to listen to more golden age stuff, from Snoop Dogg to Nas. It’s definitely a good change from a lot of modern-day rap songs, and I intend to explore a bit more.

As for pop music, I’ve come to recognize the efficiency and effectiveness of the recording industry – they have this thing down to a science. Plus, there are definitely talented artists out there. I just hope that they have some say in the music they’re producing and aren’t afraid to speak out for their art. As long as they and others are enjoying the music, I respect that.
